For awhile now I've been considering making a list because I can never recount all that well what I've seen, especially with how many series I've watched in the last few months. So I finally sat down and just typed up a list that's mostly complete. I'm sure I'll be able to think of at least one or two other shows (just added one more while typing this sentence, in fact) and add them as they come to mind.

Anyhow, there's no GOOD point to this thread, mostly just to see what others have watched and perhaps get some recommendations? I'll probably go through later and add some marks or something to note which are favorites or recommended or whatever.

Oh, and make a list of films if you want. I didn't want to try to remember what I've seen, though it really isn't all that large of a list. If I put together a more complete list I may add that.

Well, I added one more and fixed a spelling based off of your list, Invincible.

So, now if either of you would be so kind could you share your thoughts on Hellsing, Planetes, Mai Otome, Mahoromatic, and Bastard! Those are all shows I've considered grabbing (or already downloaded and have yet to touch) and would like to know if they're decent.

Also, any suggestions in particular based on what you've seen that I haven't?

If you two, or anyone else, want some suggestions or care to ask about any particular show I'll reply as well.
Since I have difficulty expressing my opinion about any series, I'll just write a quick blurb and or summary on what ever possible. That is unless you have a specific question that I might be able to answer at a later point.

Planetes

It's 2075, there's a lot of space debris and it needs to be cleaned up due to dangers of it and stuff.

This was a pretty good series overall. Good story and pacing throughout.

Mai Otome

Arika Yumemiya wants to join Garderobe which is a prestigious school that trains girls to become otomes. Not exactly a direct sequel to Mai-Hime (My-Hime) although it is hinted to being one.

This had a better start than Hime personally but felt really rushed towards the end. If you liked Hime, you'll probably like Otome.
Mahoromatic

Android maid uses whats left of her remaining life to look after some kid as his maid. Hijinks and a troubling past are obviously in this series as to be expected from shows of this nature.

A simple lighthearted comedy for the most part. Wasn't anything special nor was it bad although it is reccommended that you skip the last episode and possibly read the manga ending instead. It just felt too sudden and although the manga has a similar ending, it more fleshed out with more information about some of the side characters.

Bastard!

Some warlock named Dark Shnieder was beaten and imprisoned either as some kid or in the body of a kid. Shit starts up when his old generals start waging war on humanityy and the people unseal Schnieder hoping he'll help out their cause.

I watched this one like seven, eight years ago. It seemed enjoyable at the time but seeing as I barely remember anything about it, I can't exactly vouch for it.

I was suggested to watch Bubblegum Crisis 2040 just recently. You think it's worth it? I've seen the first couple episodes of the original Bubblegum Crisis back six or seven years ago so I don't really remember any of it but I believe I enjoyed it and thought about grabbing that. The other night I was informed that 2040 is apparently better and I should just watch that instead.

Uhhh I am sure there are a lot more, but I can't remember them. Wibs what would you say are your favorites or must sees?
Just a few of my favorites that aren't the common sort (since I also really like the popular anime, e.g. Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, Neon Genesis, etc.) would be Beck, Eureka Seven, Full Metal Panic!, and Haibane Renmei. I'm cutting it a little short since there's others I really liked but I haven't really thought about them enough to decide where exactly they'd place.

Not sure what you're looking for but including those and some others here's a few recommendations:

Beck - Really simple premise of a teenage boy, a bit of an unpopular sort, that suddenly gets into rock music and learns guitar. There's absolutely nothing "supernatural" about it as most anime tends to be quite fantastical. They did a good job with what I feel to be a realistic portrayal of living that age and dealing with things. I also really liked the music, so that helps. Pretty much my favorite anime overall.

Eureka Seven - Young boy is a big fan of "reffing" (think surfing in the air) and his hero is a leader of Gekko State, a group that puts out a zine that features reffing and other activities of theirs. Due to peculiar circumstances he partners up with a young member in that group to help pilot a mech of sorts (Zone of Enders style mech) as Gekko State continues spreading their beliefs and such. I'm trying to keep it vague so nothing is really spoiled. Most of this is stuff from the first couple episodes (of fifty total).

Full Metal Panic! - This one is a bit more popular, I believe. A clueless-to-the-world agent for an organization is put on a mission to attend a high school to protect a female student whom, unbeknownst to her, is a target of terrorist groups and such because she holds a secret that she doesn't realize she can't remember. Between school and such the agent also has his missions that, like many other shows, has him piloting a mech and doing that sort of thing. A good mix of humor at school and action on the battlefield. The two continuations are also really good where Fumoffu is an almost irrelevant series of comedy episodes and The Second Raid is more of a continuation of the main story and is very dramatic.

Haibane Renmei - Not for everyone as it's pretty much a show even children could watch and it doesn't have much anything for action as it's purely a drama. In a walled region is a city for regular people and separated from them are the Haibane, ladies with angel wings born when a speck of light or something falls from the sky, lands, and creates a room-sized egg they hatch out of. It follows a newborn (though she's born as a teenager, roughly) and the entire show is mostly her learning about the world she was born into and befriending the few other Haibane that live in the area.

That covers favorites, but some others I really enjoyed...

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzuyima - Bizarre show the plays out of order. As far as I can recall/figure the main plot is six of the thirteen episodes and they're spread across the entire season. The other seven episodes are in different chronological order and are simply placed inbetween different episodes and such. I know that when you finish Episode 6 it's a "To be continued!" ending but it doesn't follow through until Episode 8 where it does the other half of that plot. Regardless, it's a silly and lighthearted show that's just fun to watch. I got a kick out of the characters. Yup.

My Hime - Seems like it'll start as light fare but then gets more and more serious as the series goes on. Relatively simple idea that within a private school special girls are being gathered since they were born as "Hime", those with the power to summon robot-animal creature things as well as have some special powers. Gathered together they're used to fight off enemies and such. That's how it starts, the main plot takes a big change around halfway into the season. Sounds pretty basic but the characters are likable and the action is entertaining.

Gunslinger Girl - Young girls on the brink of death are given to an organization that turns them into brainwashed, cyborg killers to carry out contracts for the government. I really don't want to say a whole lot more since that sums it up well enough and doesn't get into the main plot too much. It's a short show that takes a bit too long to really start up but I liked it as a whole. I may be partial to the style of the show over the substance, though.

That's a pretty decent list of suggestions. Enjoy!
Thanks a lot Nick. Beck seems like the one I really want to see the most, thanks.

Wibs, why all the love for Eureka 7? I saw the first two episodes and hated it, to be fair I guess I didn't give it too much of a try.
And what's up with all the anime geeking out lately? I didn't know you watched so much.

Anyways, thanks to boredom and a Tivo-esque device, I'm now watching s-CRY-ed for the third/fourth fucking time...and I actually think it isn't as stupid as I did before. Simple entertainment for a simple man, what can I say.

I really do have a hankering to watch The Slayers, I only saw four episodes about four years ago on the International Channel and I loved every minute of it...

Here's my oh-so-mainstream list:
