I was booting my 360 up just to play some Modern Warfare when a friend messaged me about the World at War beta being up on Live. I'm sitting at 43% right now.
Update: Wow the beta is filled with some sharks. There's already players level 30 and up. I've never seen or experienced such one sided games in Modern Warfare. I'm just trying to figure out the lay of the map and these folks already have all the routes mapped out, can guess player tendancies and know the best spots to camp. It was a bit frustrating. Some matches I held my own, others it was trying to not go 1/2:K/D. It was brutal.
Weapons: It's odd not having the weapons specific to their country/army of their origin. For example playing as an American soldier in a Pacific theater of war using a Soviet rifle like the SVT-40 was weird. Modern Warfare's weapons just don't have that same nation-centric association that a Mauser K98 or M1 Garand has.
Killstreak rewards: I don't like the 7 Kill Streak reward. First off I don't like shooting or kniving dogs, I find it disconcerting. Second, it's completely ridiculous calling in a pack of attack dogs. They should have come up with a different reward that made sense within the context of it being a WWII game. The artillery barrage, 5 Kill Streak reward, is pretty intense but it takes so long to actually fire compared to a MW air strike and doesn't seem to be as effective. Rarely did I ever see anyone killed by it. Recon plane, 3 Kill Streak, is just UAV with a different name.
Levels: The level design is visually busier compared to Modern Warfare. That made sound like a silly, arbitrary complaint but sometimes I found it hard to discern enemies from a distance in some parts of some levels. There's simply too much going on visually. I've never really experienced that in any shooter I've ever played. Castle is the biggest offender, I got used to it the more I played.
One level had the tanks in it and honestly I was expecting a bit more, not Battlefield 1942 huge just something more than a tiny doughnut-shaped sandbox of a level. The tanks weren't too effective. You can't machine people in the catwalk easily, depends on where the tank is being driven, and already people have det packs and rpgs exploding left and right.
Is it fun? Yeah, it's fun. I wasn't blown away but World at War's multiplayer was fun. It feels like a WWII Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare mod. So it can be as fun, as intense and probably as addictive as Modern Warfare's multiplayer. It can also potentially be as frustrating since it's got many of the same perks (with different names) and flawed spawn system. If there's an equivalent to the varying combintions of Wet Works/Shipment and 3xFrag/Martyrdom I just want NOTHING to do with it. There was a couple of times where I spawned and got shot in the face before I even had a chance to move. There was even one time I got spawned into an artillery strike. I'm kind of sick of that from Modern Warfare.
Post game stats: Your kills, your Kill/death ratio, how many headshots you got, how many Recon Planes you called in, how many artillery strikes and dog packs you used versus how many were effective and killed other players. If you nerd out over post game break downs this game does it in style.
